When is an e-way bill required? The ₹50,000 rule made simple
An e-way bill is an electronic document needed under GST when goods move from one place to another. Officers check it when a vehicle is stopped.
When it is required
- When one consignment (one party's goods in one vehicle) is worth more than ₹50,000, including GST.
- For movement to another state this rule is the same across India.
- Within your own state many states have a different limit — check your state's rule on the GST / e-way bill portal.
- In some cases such as job work or branch transfer it may be needed even for a lower value.
Details needed
| Part | Details |
|---|---|
| Part A | Invoice number and date, buyer, pincode, HSN, value, GST |
| Part B | Vehicle number (or transporter ID / LR number) |
Validity depends on distance — about 1 day for every 200 km (different rules for over-dimensional cargo).
